From 40cm to 8cm

So I did it. Went into the hair salon and chopped off my hair. I went with Jack to a place in Chinatown and the guy cutting my hair didn't know what I was asking him to do. It's a good thing Jack speaks Mandarin (somewhat) so he could explain to him why I wanted the bottom part cut off first and then the top (the top part is dyed and not long enough). Once he understood what I was doing he gave me a previous client's hair to donate too. Unfortunately it was dyed so I can't send it in with mine. Too bad.

I'm super happy with my new hair. I'm not sure how hard it will be to manage once it's washed. My hair used to be super curly but over the past few months it has become more limp and wavy. It's hard to predict my hair's behaviour now because of this. It isn't as volumous as I thought it would be at this length so I'm hoping it won't cause too much trouble. I've been waiting for a short style for months now and I am so happy. When he chopped it off and it was still in its butchered stage I was already in love. After the haircut I got a pair of sunglasses and I looked fabulous. I told Jack that it was amazing how I drastically improved my image in one afternoon. But you know what? It's true. No more fugly hair. =D

Here is a set of before and after pics. The after one is not that great since the lighting in our apartment in the evening isn't the best. We're working on decorating.

Hair Donation

As I had mentioned on our website page God's Work & The Environment, I had promised to cut my hair and donate it after the wedding. Well the time has come. Tomorrow Jack and I are going to get our hair cut. Right now the longest part of my hair is 40cm (16") and I'm cutting the vast majority of it off. The donation length has to be a minimum of 10" (non-treated hair), which I will easily meet. My hair will be made to A Child's Voice Foundation, which is a non-profit organization in Mississauga, Ontario that provides funding to various Canadian kids programs for disadvantaged children.

The reason I'm doing it is simple. God has given me so much and the least I can do is give back something. I'm not fundraising for this, so if you wanted to contribute financially you can directly donate to them. If you are interested in donating your hair you can read up on their donation guidelines here (it's a pdf file).

Donating Wedding Hair

I've been contemplating on what I should do with my hair for the wedding. I would rather keep it long since I don't want my hair being so short that I would have to get extensions (they're expensive!). My hair is pretty long now because I haven't cut it in about a year. It's not because I wanted to grow it out or because I like long hair (I actually prefer short hair), but rather because I'm 1) not motivated, 2) frugal, and 3) don't know who to go to for a decent cut. Actually it's mostly #3 since I am willing to spend good money for a good quality cut. But anyway, I've decided that I am going to get a cut now to take off my split ends and layer my hair better, but to keep most of the length and grow it out until the wedding. Then after the wedding I will chop it all off and donate it to a charitable organization. I actually did this before once when I had gotten too lazy to get a haircut for a year. Picture proof!

Sorry, bad quality - it was scanned from a printed picture. That's my friend Megs in the picture with me. She got her hair cut too. Hey...what happened to that ugly grey sweather I used to have? Does anyone else think that butt-ugly clothing can be the most comfy lounge clothes?

I actually feel guilty when I spend a considerable amount of money on myself. I feel gluttonous, selfish, materialistic, and undeserving. There are so many people in the world who do not have the privileges that I have. I was just lucky to be born into an educated and well-off family. And when I think about the thousands of dollars that is going into this one day I sometimes wish I could do something more worthwhile with it, like help a community or something. So through this planning I am also looking for ways to give back because I really don't deserve to be pampered like this.
