Opinions on Chindian Couples

I've noticed that I've been getting an increasing amount of hits to my other blog from people looking for information on Chinese and Indian (Chindian) relationships. I clicked on one of the google search links that had brought one visitor to my site and the number one site from entering "indian chinese couples" into google was this thread. I really don't know why people should have an opinion about Chinese and Indian couples, or any couples based on their ancestral background for that matter, and I was curious to see what comments people had posted. One person thought that Indian guy-Chinese girl couples were better than Indian girl-Chinese guy couples. Wtf? There wasn't any rationality given but really, what kind of rationality justifies that anyway?

I also noticed that there was a significant degree of ethnic fetishism displayed. For instance, the idea that a particular ethnic group produces "hot" or "attractive" offspring. Right...because it is not dehumanizing and vain to focus on a group of people's exterior attributes. Not to mention that a lot of comments essentalize people based on stereotypes or popular idols.

And my favourite - there were many comments that were eugenic in nature. I read comments that promoted Chindian couples because it would produce better (more attractive) children. Basically, Chindian couples would be doing the world a great service by producing such beautiful children. WTF? We are humans, not dogs. Why do we still promote selective breeding among humans? ARGH!

I wonder if this is what people see Jack and me to be. Just simply a Chindian couple. How often do people stop and question the ethnic integrity, ethnic cohesiveness, or ethnic propogation of a visually similar couple - most often a White couple? My guess is slim to none. Do people judge our relationship based on the colour of our skin. Do they pass judgement on the validity, strength or compatibility of our relationship based on their preconceived notions of what we should each be like because we are of Indian and Chinese/Taiwanese ancestry? How oxymoronic is our society to still judge others based on ethnic stereotypes yet still expect "immigrants" or those who look like immigrants to assimilate into White, Anglo-Saxon Canadian culture? And really, why should our relationship be a symbolism of better relations between our ancestral countries. WTF? We are not spokes people. Why can't we be just another Canadian couple?
