Marriage And Mortgage
I had posted on my other blog a while ago about how I didn't understand why people bought a house together and then got married. Well I've been thinking about it lately and I realized how it has replaced the seriousness of a marriage. In previous generations getting married was seen as a lifelong committment. That belief exists now but divorce is legalized so there is always a way out. And even other than divorce, because of social support and other forms of assistance, women can sustain themselves independently rather than relying solely on their husband. So getting married doesn't really "tie down" a person like it used to. What has replaced that tie down? A mortgage. To get a mortgage with a person is deep committment. You can have serious financial problems if that goes bust. So to get a house with someone says something - I am committed to you. More so than a ring that can be easily taken off.
I was thinking about Jack and I who are not going to live with each other before we get married. Have we opted out of this type of commitment? Well I think we have a minor version of it. It's called a domain. That's right, we own webspace together. That is committment! One time when I was thinking of breaking up with Jack (he could be really stupid in the past) I thought to myself, what will happen with our domain? So really, the glue to our relationship is our website. Without it there wouldn't be JAMS. [I kid...somewhat]
