Marriage Licence & Videographer Done

Jack and I finally took care of the marriage licence. We stopped by City Hall today and picked one up. We filled out the form online, printed it and took it in but when we got there the lady helping us just typed everything out anyway. Seemed pointless to me. I also found the form to be quite sexist and also perpetuates "traditional" gender roles. First the groom's info HAS to go first (on the left section of the form); the bride's info cannot go there. Second, when putting in the parents' information it specifies mother's maiden name - assuming that mothers had changed their name and that fathers had not. Thirdly, it specifies father and mother for the parental section as well as groom and bride for our sections. Has anyone notified City Hall that same-sex marriage is legal in Canada? I rolled my eyes at such an idiotic and obviously outdated form.

We also took care of our videographer today. We officially signed the contract and gave in our deposit to Roger from Roc Media. We reviewed his work previously and really liked what he's done. Plus his prices are REALLY good. I looked at some other places and their starting rates are like $1500. Crazy.

So we got two wedding things done today. I'm happy - two less things to worry about. =)

Marriage Licence

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but the price of marriage licences vaires across cities in Ontario even though they are all the same licence. What's up with that? I'm assuming they vary because each district has calculated how much it costs them to process the document...or some are just greedy. So we shopped around and unexpectedly (although now we see that it's obvious) Toronto was the cheapest (we factored in travel costs). Here are the prices and a list of things to know about wedding licences.

Brampton: $135
Burlington: $140
Hamilton: $122
Kitchener: $135
Mississauga: $135
Toronto: $130
Vaughan: $125
Waterloo: $130

Wedding licence information:
1. A wedding licence and a wedding certificate is not the same thing. A licence allows you to process a legal marriage under the state while a certificate is presented to you after your marriage is recognized by the state.

2. A licence in Ontario does not have to be purchased, used, or processed in the same city in Ontario. So for instance, Jack and I will pick up our licence from Toronto and get married in Richmond Hill. As long as it is in Ontario then it's fine.

3. Ontario marriage licences are valid for up to three months starting on the date you purchase them so don't get one too far ahead otherwise you will need to buy another one and you won't get your money back for the first one. You also need to meet certain reqirements to obtain a licence, which is listed on the city links I have posted above.

4. Ontario does not require a blood test to get married. Thank God! Stupid eugenic practice.

I hope that helps those of you who wanted to know about marriage licences in Ontario. It's not too complicated but it's nice to see the comparisons laid out for you. Btw, I just noticed that Vaughan requires that you HAVE to provide your birth cirtificate as one piece of ID and citizenship cards are not valid as a second piece of ID (even though Toronto does the opposite!). Ethnocentric much? Why don't they just say that immigrants are unwelcome. Fuckers.
